The women’s leadership at Xuvia Mill

The Xuvia Industrial Mills Interpretation Center (CIMIX) joins the celebrations for March 8th, International Women’s Day, with the launch of a special activity focusing on one of the most significant yet overlooked figures in Galician industrial history: María López.

The activity, titled “María conta” (María Tells), consists of an audioguided tour designed to be enjoyed this weekend at the Mill’s facilities. Through seven sound stations, visitors can hear the first-person account of María López, a native of Neda and the wife of Juan Lestache, founder of the Xuvia flour factory.

This immersive project recreates, through a carefully crafted sound atmosphere, the daily life of the industrial complex in the 18th century. The tour visits the most relevant milestones in the history of the mill and the biography of María López, who, after being widowed in 1802, not only maintained the factory’s production but also had the courage to defy the social norms of the time by remarrying for love, facing scandal to defend her personal and professional freedom.

With the launch of this immersive experience, CIMIX seeks to become a space for reflection on the role of women in history. Interested parties can formalize their reservations through the website cimixnaron.gal or at the center’s facilities on March 7th and 8th.
